Emergency Shelter
The Emergency Shelter is a safe and secure facility which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Shelter is a comfortable, clean, supportive environment, as seen by the pictures on this website or our brochure. It offers women and their children privacy and provides support.
The Shelter is accessible to women and their children in the entire Rainy River District. Safe and immediate transportation can be arranged for women anywhere in the district, any time, day or night.
The Shelter provides these services to women who have been victims of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse:
- Referral information
- Women’s support groups
- Exercise facilities
- Transitional program
- Child Witness Program
- Outreach services
Shelter staff can act as advocates for women and children, accessing housing, legal aid, and other community services.
Second Stage Housing
The Rainy River District Women’s Shelter of Hope operates a ten unit apartment building that provides safe and affordable housing for women and their children who have left an abusive relationship.
New Horizons – Second Stage Housing offers:

Outreach Crisis Counselling & Transitional Support
Offering support to women who may be living in an abusive situation, may be inquiring on what options are available or have left an abusive situation and are still trying to maintain a life free from abuse and violence
Outreach Counsellors & Transitional Support will support you:
- to help you recognize healthy & unhealthy relationships
- Safety planning
- Access community supports and referrals
- Accompaniment to appointments
- Assistance with accessing housing resources/applications /search
- Available weekdays, some evenings and some weekends
- Group work
- Individual counselling
- Life skills
- All services are free & Confidential

An abuser has learned to use violence as a means of control.

No one has the right to treat you badly. You have the right to live without fear of violence and abuse.

Psychological, emotional, spiritual, financial, verbal, sexual, stalking, etc… You do not always see the bruises.
Ignoring an assault is dangerous.
Even the threat of an assault should be considered a danger signal. It will very likely happen again. Assaults usually only get worse.
